Because the base station to which access devices installed on clients connect is shared, operators limit the maximum download speeds well below the capabilities of Wi-Fi technology. In this case, it is possible to achieve the maximum download speed of between 900 Mbit / s and 1 Gbit / s. In some cases, operators decide to use copper lines to build hybrid fiber optic networks. The first telecommunications networks, which were used to provide a permanent Internet access service, were based on copper connections.
What is a good internet speed?
- To achieve an accurate reading, multiple ping tests are conducted consecutively, with the final result being the average of all these tests.
- Many people hide routers in closets or utility rooms, which worsens the range of the network.
- If your ping is consistently high, it may indicate network congestion, a distant server, or a Wi-Fi issue rather than your plan’s speed.
- Knowing how to interpret your speed test results makes it easier to pinpoint where a problem is occurring.
- I can test my internet speed to learn about my connection speeds.
- The app strangely lacks the website’s ability to always test and show all parameters.
In this case, check whether the Internet works on other devices (e.g. a smartphone connected to the same Wi-Fi network). You can check this using your mobile phone (using the LTE network) or ask a friend. It also happens that the fault occurs on the supplier’s side. Various types of malfunctions can result in poor link quality or a complete lack of internet connectivity. In some cases, the decrease in performance is due to the excessive load generated by the antivirus or firewall.

Test my internet speed?
Most internet providers advertise the maximum speeds available, so it’s not unusual to see a difference between your actual speeds and your plan’s top speed in the internet speed test results. We suggest an upload speed of at least 35Mbps if you livestream 4K content, plus some additional bandwidth for all your other applications. Our speed test provides unbiased results by pinging a speed test server located outside your internet provider’s network.

See our Life-or-Death Emergencies page for more information on how to make an appointment. If your Speedtest shows that your mobile internet connection isn’t as fast as you need on your smartphone, try closing any apps or browsers running in the background that could be slowing you down and run another test. Download the free mobile and desktop Speedtest apps for Android and iOS, as well as other platforms, and take a video test to see what your optimum streaming quality is. But for those who work from home or have multiple people using the same connection, you’ll need faster speeds. When thinking about your own need for speed, it’s key to consider how your network will be used and how many people will use it. For an overview of the speeds recommended for several popular online activities, check out the graphic below.
Why should I test my internet speed with an internet speed test?
For everyday browsing and streaming, ping has little noticeable impact. Lower ping means a more responsive connection. The higher your download speed, the more you can do simultaneously without buffering or slowdowns. For most users, download speed is the most important factor in day-to-day online activities.
Consult our guide on how to determine and fix your internet issues. Other factors can thwart your speed test results, too, like failing or outdated equipment, local network congestion, bad wired connections, and more. By default, band steering can force your devices to use the 2.4 GHz band if it’s the stronger connection, so your results may be far lower than expected. How many people in your household use the internet/WiFi on a daily basis? The FCC’s upload speed of 20Mbps for broadband is probably fine for those who don’t livestream. The total sum of the two should be good for your download speed needs.

Pushing the data to the server over the network via multiple streams ensures that the maximum throughput is measured. Instead of downloading a file, a large file of random data is created on your device and pushed through all connections to the server. Recording the data throughput against measurement time finally yields the available internet speed for downloading data. This approach ensures that the entire bandwidth of the internet connection is maxed out, and thereby the maximum data throughput can be measured.
Speed may be slow because you’re using the internet at peak times, or your router may be outdated. For example, there may be issues with the provider’s service area, like faulty connections somewhere within the neighborhood. Some internet providers state “up to” when advertising maximum speeds because many variables can prevent you from hitting that top speed.
Life-or-Death Emergency Service is for customers who are traveling to a kudosbet foreign country in the next 14 days for a life-or-death emergency. You can apply for routine service at an acceptance facility if you are applying for the first time or for a child under 16. Choose this service if you are traveling to a foreign country in less than 2-3 weeks.
Routers older than 3–4 years often can’t support current Wi-Fi standards, and some internet providers throttle speeds during peak hours. Knowing how to interpret your speed test results makes it easier to pinpoint where a problem is occurring. If your equipment test looks healthy but device speeds are low, learn how to ensure you’re getting the speed you’re paying for.
